What are the disadvantages of a fixed or variable width web site?
When designing a fixed width site, you must consider how it will be displayed on a visitor's monitor. For example, if the visitor has a small monitor or older computer, they may not have the resolution necessary to view a wide fixed site. So, they may need to do a lot of scrolling to see everything. A lot of people will not like this and will just go on to other sites.
A variable width site, on the other hand, is difficult to setup if you need your content displayed in a specific manner. It will automatically size to the viewer's browser window but if they have a small monitor or older computer, your content may adjust in a manner in which you hadn't intended.
Our experience indicates the fixed width sites are less troublesome when working with the content.
